Water testing before buying filters

The term ?water filter? can be a bit misleading, because there are drastically different types of equipment for filtering water that share the same name. Pitchers and faucet mounts filter tap water for drinking, while whole-house water filters reduce contaminants like sediment and rust in your plumbing. The type of water filter that you need depends on the type of contaminants in your water and how much water you want to purify. But its very, very important to test your water before you purchase a water filter. The contaminants in your water will determine the water filter system that?s best for you. If you have more than one of the four classes of contaminants in your water, combine the appropriate water filter systems to remove them. Look for water filters that list NSF or other laboratory certification for the contaminants you need to remove.

There is no such thing in nature as ?pure? water. Nearly all water contains contaminants, even in the absence of nearby pollution-causing activities. Many dissolved minerals, organic carbon compounds, and microbes find their way into your drinking water as water comes into contact with air and soil. When pollutant and contaminant levels in drinking water are excessively high, they may affect certain household routines and/or be detrimental to human health.

Obvious problems, such as staining of plumbing fixtures and laundry, as well as many objectionable tastes and odors, may be evidence of excessive levels of contaminants in your water supply. Many of these impurities are naturally present and are considered a nuisance, presenting no hazard to human health. In addition, high nitrate levels indicate contamination by surface water or seepage which may convey other harmful contaminants, such as pesticides, into household water supplies.

Now what to test for:

It?s important that you not only know how to test, but that you know what you are testing for and why. Buy a good test kit and you can test for chlorine, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, pH and water hardness. Every test kit is different, but they all come with written instructions for how to perform the tests. Chlorine kills not only germs, but also your fish. When adding new water to a tank, you need to check your chlorine level with a chlorine test kit. Next, test for Ammonia. Ammonia is the direct result of fish peeing in the water. Ammonia levels inevitably rise if you have fish in the tank. Nitrites

Nitrates are a result of the conversion process of ammonia and nitrite. While not as toxic as either, they should not be allowed to build up.

Testing pH Some fish have no problem with the pH balance of the water, but many tropical varieties do. It is easy to test. Between a measured pH of 6 and 8 is where most fish are comfortable, but a pH of 7 is neutral and safest. Above 8, the water is too alkaline. Below 6, the water is too acidic. Chemicals to correct pH can be purchased at a fish store, but follow label directions very carefully. Though different fish like different pH levels, all fish react badly to sudden drastic pH changes. Try not to change the pH more than a point or two in 24 hours.

Water hardness testing is not especially critical, but should be done on occasion to prevent a shift in water quality over time.

Bottom line is, its very important to test your water before buying water filters.

A Few Different Types Of Water Purifier Filters

The water purifier filter is a device that helps in removing impurities from water through use of a fine physical barrier, chemical process and/or biological process. They are used for cleansing of water used in irrigation, drinking water, aquariums as well as swimming pools. The primary function of the water purifier filter is to soften water as well as remove harmful chemicals of which chlorine is a good example.
May Be Harmful To Your Health, But Is Normally Used To Eliminate Bad Taste And Smells
There are many who feel that the contaminants contained in drinking water that has not been filtered will result in causing harm to the health of the person and may even result in their contracting cancer. However, unfiltered water is normally associated with bad taste as well as smell for which you may choose to use a water purifier filter to get rid of the same.
The water purifier filters that you use can be of different kinds, and the one that most appropriately meets individual needs and requirements is the one that you should choose. It is essential that you decide how much water is required to be filtered. You may want to choose the faucet mounted water purifier filter, which is not at all expensive.
Another advantage of such a filter is that it is portable and it is not demanding of much space requirement. The majority of faucet mounted water purifier filters are able to be turned on and off with the help of a switch.
Another type of water purifier filter available is the counter top water filters that sits on the countertop close to a sink and are connected with the kitchen faucet with the help of a diverter that replaces the existing aerator. Counter top water purifier filters are easy to remove and are also operable using a switch to turn it on and off.
You may also opt for an in-line water purifier filter that is installed directly in the cold water pipe, and is in most instances, disposable. Yet another type of water purifier filter often used is the under-the-counter-water filter unit that is mounted beneath the kitchen sink.
It is often found connected to a dedicated drinking water faucet, and is absolutely independent of the main kitchen faucet. It makes possible not wasting filtered water when washing dishes, which makes such water purifier filters very popular in private homes.

Saving money with water filters

Do you filter your water? Are you interested in saving hundreds of dollars every year? Water filter is one way to remove the grains, the grit, and the elements from your water making it safer and healthier to drink. Purchasing a water filter is a less obvious way to many of us to save money and decrease our living expenses. If you can?t stand the taste of your tap water, you may have already decided to purchase bottled water, as a better alternative. But there?s a more cost-effective way to obtain fresher, better tasting and healthier water.

Bottled Versus Filtered Water: Cost Comparison

Bottled water comes from many sources, including tap water. Regardless of the water?s source, the bottling company processes, bottles and distributes it, increasing its cost. Depending on the brand and type of water filter you purchase, the cost of filtered water averages around $0.30 (or less) per gallon. Bottled water (with prices ranging from $0.89 to $8.26 per gallon), on average, costs twelve times as much per gallon.

Water Filter Types

Several types of water filtration systems are available. Some types, like the whole house water filter, aren?t feasible for apartment dwellers. Instead, choose a filtration system based on the contaminant types you?re trying to remove from the water. For apartment dwellers, countertop, pitcher and faucet-mounted filters are the easiest to install. They?re more limited than under-sink filters because they?re visible and usually can?t filter contaminants besides tastes, smells and lead. Under-sink filters are hidden from view. Some only remove bad tastes and odors, while others may remove lead, bacteria and sediment by using multiple cartridges, designed to filter out a particular type of contaminant. Unlike the countertop models, under-sink filters must be attached directly to the pipes below your sink. If you?re unfamiliar with plumbing, hiring a plumber for the installation may be necessary.

How Water Filtration Works Your water filtration system should produce water that tastes and smells good by removing undissolved impurities such as silt, sediment, rust and sand, without removing beneficial elements, like fluoride. Examples of dissolved impurities include pesticides, chlorine, and heavy metals. Consider buying a filter that removes cysts, like cryptosporidium and giardia, along with viruses and bacteria which can cause illnesses. Reverse osmosis, another common type of water filter, is very effective, especially when combined with a carbon filter. Reverse osmosis forces water that is under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane to remove many contaminants from the water. This type of system is more expensive to operate, so you?ll have to determine whether the additional filtering ability is worth the extra cost. To save money, start by evaluating the quality of your water. Then, determine your filtering needs, set a budget, and purchase the water filter best suited to your own situation. You know, its only one time investment!

Filtering systems are a necessity at home to ensure clean water for your daily drinking and cooking needs. The countertop glass water filters are attractive, economical and effective water filtering systems that you can install at home.
Countertop water filters may be with changeable cartridges or otherwise. The interchangeable cartridges have a life span of about six months to one year. They are easy to install and remove. Counter top water filters are necessary in your homes as they effectively screen water for heavy metals and minerals like lead or asbestos. However, they do not soften the hard or mineralized water. The required minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium are retained in water. There are stage carbon media filters also which can be useful to screen compounds like chlorine and hydrocarbon compounds. They are designed to provide adequate protection against viruses, bacteria like e.coli, salmonella, cysts, etc. The countertop glass water filters are designed to reduce the cloudiness caused due to the microscopic sediments in water. Most filters remove chlorine that is present in the municipal water supplied to your homes. The filters may have an ion exchange process which ensures that required minerals in your drinking water are retained. The filters are efficient in removing synthetic chemicals like herbicides, pesticides and solvents. Some brands like Aquasana AQ-4000 even have the capability to remove crypotsporidum and guardia, common chlorine resistant microscopic organisms. Fine 0.5 micron mechanical filters are mostly used for the purpose.

It also comes with an electronic filter change indicator to let you know when it?s time to replace the filter.

The Brita Aqualux Water Pitcher Filter uses an ion exchange resin filter that magnets most of the impurities lurking in drinking water. By doing so, it shields you from drinking the harmful water. It can remove lead, mercury, cadmium, zinc, ad copper. In effect, water comes out clean, pure, and great-tasting.

Culligan: Pure and Clean Water Made EZ

Culligan is another widely trusted brand of water purification systems. One of its most well-known products is the IC-EZ-1 EZ-Change Icemaker and Drinking Water Filter, which got 5 stars on Amazon. The drinking water filter is easy to use with its twist mechanism, which gives the no-leak guarantee so you get to save water. It also comes with a double water shutoff. And when it?s time to replace the filter, Culligan replacement filters are widely and conveniently available.

Watts: Pure and Clean Water Made Innovative

If the other two brands focus on simple water filtration, Watts sets its sights on water filtration innovations and new technologies. One such offer is the 500320 3-Stage Undercounter Drinking Water Filter that pushes water through three different filtration stages for thorough cleansing. The best news of all: the third stage is an Ultraviolet or UV unit, which uses UV lamps to eliminate bacteria and viruses that have managed to survive the first two filtration stages.

Together, the three filtration stages can remove lead, particulates, and cysts, and can restore water to its refreshing taste and smell, freeing it from the taste and smell of chlorine. All in all, it can filter up to 1,350 gallons of water. It is rated with 4.7 stars on Amazon, making it an ideal choice. It is innovative and thorough, yet very easy to install and to maintain. Another excellent news: it comes with its own lead-free faucet.

Does Anyone Have Access To The May 2007 Consumer Reports Magazine? I Need Some Info On Water Filters And…?

this issue has the ratings and such I need. I just want to ask some questions about which water filters of various types are best. I'm so tired of taking empty bottles to the store, refilling them, and bringing them back home. Mom refuses to buy a water filter w/o knowing the best kind in our price range. We rent an apartment and I don't know if we can have a whole house system or even if we could afford one. But perhaps the kind you mount on the faucet? See, I just dunno. If you're willing to help me with the info, please reply!
Thanks so much!

Pitcher Filters Vs Faucet Filters — Which Is Better?

Currently I'm using the Pur 2-stage filter for pitchers and I am very satisfied with the taste and quality of the water after filtering. I don't mind the price of the filters and it works well for me.
However, my boyfriend has a problem with how frequently the pitcher has to be refilled. He also doesn't refill it when he does drink water so I end up having to refill it before I can have any water when I get home from work. :P
I guess I'm just wondering if it'd be worth it to switch to a faucet-mounted filter. It seems more expensive, but I don't know how long the filter would last. I'd discourage use for anything besides drinking water, but we do drink a lot of water.
What do you guys think? Also, I'll be sticking with Pur regardless of how I go.

Drinking Water Filters Needed More and More

All the doctors and nutritionists, all the diets and the fitness instructors tell us to drink as much water as possible, the minimum of liquid consumed during a day being at least 2 liters. And then we hear from the environmentalists and other government organizations that water is contaminated with all kind of bacteria.
The thing that makes drinking water safe is the water filter. Drinking water filters are available now in many forms and using different technologies. The main goal of the drinking water filter is to make the tap water or almost any other type of water safe for drinking.
There are several types of drinking water filters. Some of them are portable ones like for example the water pitcher filters while others need to be attached to the water pipe. Each of them comes with pros and cons and because of the large variety of drinking water filters available on the market it is important to decide the kind of water filter you want.
It's not only that there are drinking water filters available on the market, but also shower filters systems and whole house water filter systems. The drinking water filter is by far the most popular one and is available as portable filter, counter top filter, under counter filter, and faucet mounted filter.
The most popular ones are the charcoal water filters, the ceramic water filters, the reverse osmosis filters and the Ultraviolet water filters. All the filtering systems have cartridges and filters that need to be replaced from time to time, and need to be cleaned.
As in any other market there are several manufacturers, but you are the one that should decide which one is the best for you. If you want to have purified water in your entire house than obviously the best choice is a whole house water filter system. However these systems are somewhat expensive and their maintenance is not very easy either. Nonetheless with such a system you will have purified water in the entire house because the filter system is connected to the pipe before it enters the house.
The cost of a drinking water filter ranges from inexpensive to pricey, but again it depends on the technology used and the amount of water that can be purified. A small water filter will probably be enough to supply your house with drinking water, but more and more people like to have the water they cook with purified too.
Counter top and under counter water filters seem to be good both at giving enough purified water to drink and cook as needed. And while the counter top water filter is easier to install and does not require extra plumbing work, it is usually cheaper than the under the counter water filter.
So if you have enough space on the counter and you only want to have drinking and cooking water, you can definitely choose a counter top water filter. The main disadvantage of a drinking water filter is that you need a filter for each faucet where you want to have drinking water.
